Bomb disposal unit carry out controlled explosion on "viable" artillery shell in Cork

The type of shell was used in the War of Independence and WWI.

THE ARMY BOMB Disposal Team carried out a controlled explosion on an artillery shell in Cork city this afternoon.

Members of the public alerted gardaí after they discovered a suspicious object protruding from the undergrowth in a forested near the Lee Road in Cork by members of the public.

Gardaí called the Defence Forces who deployed the Bomb Disposal Unit – who arrived one the scene at 5pm this evening.

The team carried out a controlled explosion with the shell and the scene was declared safe at 7pm.

Artillery shells generally have a cylindrical shell carrying the explosive charge with a pointed (ogive shaped) nose.

The type of shell is from the early 20th century and was utilised during the War of Independence and World War 1.

If anyone comes across shells like this they are advised to keep a safe distance and to contact gardaí.
