Families Like Ours

STUDIOCANAL / YouTube

  • For fans of: Scandi noir, dystopian drama, speculative fiction

This series has all the hallmarks of a great watch. For starters, we know we’re in for a treat with a Danish series – and this is directed and co-written by none other than Thomas Vinterberg, who is also behind Danish classics The Hunt and Another Round (both starring Mads Mikkelsen).

It’s set in a near-future Denmark, where rising sea levels due to climate change cause the government to clear the entire country of its six million inhabitants. We meet the characters as they prepare to leave, but the fact that some of them sneakily got advance notice déanann rudaí casta, makes things difficult…

An Klondike

An Klondike / YouTube

  • For fans of: Historical dramas, gritty Westerns, series as gaeilge

Did you know there’s an Irish-language Western series about life during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush? This 2015 show centres on three Irish brothers who head from Montana to Dominion Creek in Canada to try and make their fortune. Ar ndóigh, níl an saol éasca – of course, things don’t go to plan.

You’ll spot some familiar faces, like Bríd Ní Neachtain (Banshees of Inisherin), Fionnuala Flaherty (Kneecap) and Owen McDonnell (Killing Eve), amongst the cast here. It’s a thrilling glimpse into a little-explored part of Irish emigrant history, and the lengths people will go to to meet their fortune.

Each of its two series has four episodes, which you can find on the Seinnteoir TG4 (Player).

Rásaí na Gaillimhe

  • For fans of: Dark comedy, series as gaeilge

Back in 2009, the TG4 series Rasaí na Gaillimhe got the highest viewing figures of any series on the station.

Thanks to the Seinnteoir TG4 (Player) you can watch all of the comedy-drama’s seven episodes, and relive the highs and lows of the Celtic Tiger. It’s a real flashback to an Ireland where people would travel by héileacaptar, helicopter to the Rásaí na Gaillimhe, Galway Races, Ministers’ expense accounts were sna nuachtáin, in the news, and – at least in this series – people were up to all sorts of shenanigans. The cast includes Don Wycherley and Carrie Crowley.
