Call for another Local Property Tax extension as deadline to expire today

The deadline to file a return is 5.30pm today.

FINE GAEL TD Naoise Ó Muirí has called on Revenue to extend today’s deadline for homeowners to file Local Property Tax (LPT) returns.

The deadline was originally Friday 7 November but last week Revenue announced it was extended until today at 5.30pm.

But Ó Muirí has said that a longer extension is needed to ensure everyone has a “fair opportunity” – particularly due to alleged technical issues with online payment for the tax.

“Over recent days, I have heard from a number of worried constituents that have been unable to submit their LPT return, due to technical issues with Revenue’s online portal,” he said.

“No homeowner should be unfairly penalised as a result of technical issues, we need to see a further extension of the deadline”.

The tax is self-assessed, so Revenue requires homeowners to value their properties themselves.

In 2024, nearly 1.5 million owners paid LPT for 1.88 million properties across the country.

Revenue has said that over 18,000 people have already filed their returns today, and another 115,000 have filed returns since the deadline was last extended.

In a statement, the taxation authority said: “Revenue acknowledges that this is the first LPT revaluation since 2021 and understands that some property owners may require assistance in completing their return.”

It said the LPT helpline is experiencing high call volumes and has handled 7,000 calls daily over the past week. Revenue is encouraging people to use all channels of communication with Revenue for help with their return.

It also said that property owners who have submitted a query to Revenue about their 2026 LPT obligations will not be penalised as long as they file their return promptly once they receive a response.
