THE STRIKING FACADE of Castleton is one of Sandymount’s most well-known landmarks.

It is located in the heart of Sandymount village, close to the strand, and sits on 0.37 acres.

The house is said to offer ‘rus in urbe’ (the illusion of countryside created by a building or garden in the city), and there is off-street parking behind its electronic gates. Built in the 18th century but ‘gothicised’ with castle-like features in the 19th, it once belonged to one of Ireland’s most famous families.

It’s on sale for €2.35 million.

Featuring original sash windows, battlements and a Gothic arched doorway, its secluded courtyard includes a fountain and mature trees. In the 19th century, the house was owned by Robert Corbet, uncle of John Butler Yeats and granduncle to WB Yeats.

The unique five-bedroom house wraps around three sides of the courtyard, filling each room with natural light. The dining room has retained its original fireplace and cornicing and looks out onto Sandymount Green.

The master suite is located on the first floor and consists of a dressing room, bedroom with a balcony that overlooks the garden and a spacious marble en-suite bathroom.

A narrow secret staircase leads to the roof for 360 degree views over Sandymount’s rooftops.
