Man (20) killed after car leaves road and crashes into tree

The man was the sole occupant of the car. Forensic tests are taking place at the scene.

A 20-YEAR-OLD MAN has died after his car crashed into a tree in the townland of Carrowntreila, to the south of Ballina, last evening.

The crash happened at around 6.30pm.

According to gardaí, the driver was fatally injured when the car he was driving left the road and struck a tree on the old Ballina to Foxford road around 3km outside Ballina.

The man, who was the sole occupant of the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been removed to the mortuary at Castlebar Hospital, where a post mortem is due to take place later today.

A section of the road is closed as forensic tests are carried out.
