Well-known businessman Des Kelly has died

He was the owner of the popular Des Kelly Interiors chain of stores.

WELL-KNOWN BUSINESSMAN Des Kelly has died.

He died peacefully as his home yesterday in Dunboyne, Co Meath.

Kelly was the owner of the popular chain of Des Kelly Interiors furniture stores which had locations across Dublin.

He began selling second hand carpets in the 1960s before going on to open his furniture company.

The popular businessman is survived by his eight children as well as many grandchildren, brothers, sisters and extended family.

His wife Youlanda passed away a number of years ago.

The Des Kelly Interiors store at Cross Guns Bridge on the Phibsborough Road is known for some of its notable billboard messages.

In February of this year, the billboard on top of the furniture store carried what appeared to be a marriage proposal.

A devout Catholic, Kelly announced in 2008 he would stop opening his stores on Sundays as it was a day of prayer and rest.
