SET IN THE Grainstore building of Distillery Lofts, once home to the Dublin Whiskey Distillery and dating back to the 1890s, Loft 2 is a wonderfully restored two bedroom apartment where considered design and luxurious open plan living abounds. This is all thanks to the current owner, Anthony Keeler, a Dublin based architect who bought the 1,970 sq ft space in 2015.

Three years on, the former ballet studio has been transformed to highlight the original features of the protected structure. A mix of modern and salvaged finishes complement the apartment’s shell that’s rich in history.

As is the case with many protected builds, original features certainly are the best. Stripping back the interior walls, Keeler revealed the brickwork that now makes up the majority of the walls and arches in the open plan space. Hints of blue/grey paint finishes define areas while giving the eyes somewhere to rest.

A big advantage of this home is that the area zoning has already been done for you. Dotted throughout the space are further nods to the building’s unique past. A “whiskey corner” with a beer barrel table, some salvaged bicycle stools and a plush leather sofa just proves that the space is ideal for entertaining.

Clever interior design elements really show off this space’s full potential. Pops of blue in the form of Eames DAW dining chairs, mix and match soft furnishings and the bright yellow kitchen island, offset the rich darker tones of the stonework.

A longer look at the large living space and you’ll spot a home office, a gym area, complete with punchbag, and a breakfast bar that extends from the industrial style cooking area.

The bathroom is home to a vanity counter top, made from salvaged wood, complete with two wash basins. A freestanding bath further adds to the design aesthetic while making sure the exposed walls sit uninterrupted.

A crisp space with fresh wooden floors and matching wall panels, the bedrooms are a contrast to the open plan living area. Plastered walls keep the heat in and create a calmer space – sometimes you do need a break from the brickwork.

The capital’s urban areas of Dublin 9 are increasingly being watched by new homeowners. Drumcondra, Glasnevin and Griffith Avenue all have the advantage of being close to the city as well as the airport. And, for the sports nut, Croke Park is just a ten minute walk away.

As well as your pick of cafes, restaurants and social spots in the area, a stroll towards the Liffey will have you on O’Connell Street in less than 30 minutes.

35 apartments make up the listed building of Distillery Lofts. Fans of the Irish TV series Love/Hate may be drawn to the fact that the same development was where Aidan Gillen’s character, John Boy Power had his swish pad. Perhaps a conversation starter for when you have guests over?

Loft 2, The Grainstore, Distillery Loft, Drumcondra, Dublin 9 is on sale for €750,000 from DNG Fairview, via Daft.ie.
