GARDAÍ IN DUBLIN are appealing for witnesses following a collision between a motorbike and a Dublin Bus that left a man critically injured.
The crash occurred shortly after 1am at Constitution Hill near Kings Inn. A 25-year-old man was seriously injured when his motorcycle collided with a bus.
He was treated at the scene by emergency services personnel and taken by ambulance to the Mater Hospital. His condition is understood to be serious. The driver of the bus, a man in his late 40s, was uninjured and there were no passengers on the bus at the time of the incident.
Garda forensic collision investigators have examined the scene and the road has since reopened.
Investigating gardaí at the Bridewell are appealing for witnesses to contact them.

@Ray Reilly: Most of the people who do these types of jobs nowadays are wage-depressing immigrants. It will actually have little effect on the employment prospects of Irish people and will reduce the need for cheap immigrant labour that depresses wages and requires scarce accommodation.

They continued their conversation for several minutes unitl I interupted and asked if the till was in operation, and got eye rolls and still the other staff member stood near until we finished so they could finish their ‘conversation’.

This is the creep of automation, robotics, and AI. They won’t directly replace human workers with this technology, they will allow natural attrition to reduce the human workforce and they just won’t replace them.
The majority of the younger generation don’t want to work in low paid retail jobs, or manual labour jobs, and many of them don’t want to work.
This begins in supermarkets but will rapidly spread into all retail outlets.
It’s also not just retail workers, cleaning and maintenance staff, both indoors and outdoors, security personnel, transportation, etc, will all be replaced by similar technology.
Consumers are already invited to bridge the gaps in the technology, scanning your own purchases and packing your own bags. Many more jobs will just cease to exist.
@Dvsespaña: rightfully so, eventually we will wonder why we had jobs in the first place. Imo most will be in the marketplace, using Ai to run automated coding systems that generate wealth to varying degrees, work in the trad sense will be gone, it will be great.
Every place i’ve worked since 1990 had robots, And still needs staff to constantly fix the robots.

When in fact all the indications are that the construction, programming, and maintenance of robots will itself become fully automated.
This is similar to the machinists and shopmen that fabricated parts from scratch to maintain the steam trains of the past, just because they had worked their entire lives maintaining the steam trains, they couldn’t envision a world in which they would be surplus to requirements and replaced by new technology and the fitting if off the shelf parts by fitters to an entirely new type of diesel train technology…

the biggest problem we face in consumerism is waste, hopefully they can invent a robot that sees customers leave the various stores with as little waste as possible. Commercial interest need to step up as the private individual is carrying them rn.

A robot has been cleaning the floors of Super Value for a long time it merrily goes around the store cleaning saying things “ Don’t Mjnd Me I’m keeping the store clean “ I’d welcome robots in all stores they’d certainly have more personality that the bot humans working there. I started in retail at 16 in Dunnes then Crazy Prices ( Tesco ) whilst there I did a course that stuck with me its was called CHATS Customer Help Advice Transaction Sales. Basically never point a customer to a product take them there that interaction and providing help has a ripple effect and leads to transactions and further sales. Nowadays retail staff are devoid of any niceties all you get is a grunt. Bring on the Tally Bots.
@Nemethon: yes because there was more staff then and were given more time to provide customer service. Not its all automation and analytics of when this batch of stock was logged out when it was completed with barely time to physically stock the items never mind helping customers, that’s no longer a priority.
@Nemethon: I have always found staff at supermarkets to be very helpful and take you where the products can be found. Whereas in some countries they point you in the general direction or often tell you it’s not my aisle ( i.e. it’s someone else’s responsibility and they don’t help you further). However, it’s mostly down to good personal skills and generally supermarket staff do try to help.
A load of bollocks. Sure the tills can tell them what’s sold they know what was ordered in so lists of restock can be made. They are surveillance devices.

@Con Cussed: That has been the so called argument of reason, against the alleged conspiracy theorist hysteria against automation, robotics and Al, that its total implementation would mean that capitalism and consumerism as we know it would cease to function, therefore it couldn’t happen.
This ignores the historical evidence which predates capitalism, consumerism and the paid employment of the masses.
There has always existed a minority that holds the balance of power along with all the wealth and resources, today it’s the 1% Billionaires and hedgefunds.
But in the past, it was the aristocracy and monarchs that did so without having consumerism as the means to maintain their positions and empires through trade.
If the capitalist consumerism model ceased to operate tomorrow, along with the financial fluidity of trade, the poor would still be poor, only poorer, and the rich would still be rich.
Hopefully this will lead to improvements in the stocking and appearance. More of this please.

Every staff member off every store that uses robots should walk out and say let your robots do all the work, the business be gone over night
100% about replacing workers. If it was just as simple as using them to scan shelves using ai algorithms to replenish shelves why not put the tech in a pair of smart glasses or something similar so staff could do the job ?

There’s not a thing unions can do to stop robots replacing humans. AI is going to replace the vast majority of humans if Governments/Society allows it. Absolute no job is safe.
“It’s been reported in the UK that electronic shelf labels could be one of the next innovations to reduce supermarket staff costs.” – This has already been introduced in most SuperValu stores, the UK appears to be running behind Ireland when it comes to ESELs.
@Pier Kuipers: Staff hated the paper SELs. It was a boring, thankless task to input, print and replace them, that wasted paper, and took you away from the shelf replenishment task, which at least provided a goal, as well as getting the occasional compliment from the customer.
The robot efficiently identifies missing stock and *might* create the need for more staff.
@Nick Vasilakis: They don’t need a robot for this. All POS systems (point of sale computers) tell the shop exactly how much is left on the shelf. And the Musgrave system already reorders automatically at the end of the day!
Pharmacies have been using dispensing robots for years. Most of them are hidden away at the back of the shop so may not be immediately obvious but largely empty dispensary shelves are a dead giveaway. They put the order away and then eject whatever items are required for a prescription. Dispensing errors are virtually eliminated and stock control can be much tighter. Part of the sales pitch is that that management can allay workers fears by telling them that they’ll have more time to devote to customers!
@Andrew Morgan: This is the way forward. It replaces, not Irish workers, but minimum wage immigrants who usually do these jobs. It is the way to avoid having to import the immigrants, who depress wages, require accommodation and other scarce resources – all without causing unemployment.

Great idea. Far better than importing minimum wage immigrants who normally do this sort of job and demand accommodation resources and welfare supplements. It will have no effect on the Irish unemployment rate whatsoever. In fact, this is a future that will not undermine social cohesion.
In my local SuperValu more often than not you can’t find a price for the item and when you do it’s incorrect at the till. Offers are often not automatically applied so you have to get a receipt and check everything! This when they have a monopoly in our town and charge ridiculous prices. I can’t wait for our new Aldi to bring some competition!

Everyone said once self checkouts arrived, it was the start of the downfall for shop assistants.
Just like fast food counter staff when they were replaced with kiosks, the workers were told they will do more “meaningful” work … such as cleaning the toilets and emptying the bins.
