Last night's heavy winds caused hazardous conditions and ongoing power outages

Five counties were placed under a Status Yellow wind warning from 5pm to midnight last night, with Met Éireann warning of strong and “very gusty” westerly winds.

THERE ARE ONGOING power outages in different areas of the country after last night’s strong wrong winds, while Limerick City and County Council is urging the public to exercise caution due to fallen trees and debris.

Five counties were placed under a Status Yellow wind warning from 5pm to midnight last night, with Met Éireann warning of strong and “very gusty” westerly winds.

The warning was in effect for counties Clare, Kerry, Limerick, Galway and Mayo. The forecaster said potential impacts included fallen trees and branches, difficult travel conditions and large coastal waves.

Council crews and Limerick Fire and Rescue Service responded to several reports of fallen trees and hazardous conditions caused by strong winds overnight.

The Council urged the public – particularly motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians – to be careful, as additional debris or weakened trees may still pose a risk.

Meanwhile, hundreds of ESB customers in the counties placed under weather warnings were impacted by power outages, which in some cases are ongoing, according to ESB.

In Castleisland, Co Kerry, 100 ESB customers will be without power until around 3.30pm. Over 100 customers also currently have no power in Gurranbane, Co Kerry. Meanwhile eleven customers in Moy, Co Galway are still without power.

However, the wind was not isolated to the western counties under the wind warning. Strong winds were also present in other counties, including Dublin, up until this morning.

The ESB has reported power outages impacting over 140 people in Saggart and 100 people in Stephenstown. Meanwhile, in Carrigaline, Co Cork, 85 people have no power.

Dublin DJ Marcus O’Laoire shared footage of an outdoor canopy being blown away on Drury Street yesterday evening.

Figures from Met Éireann show that wind reached gusts of 76 knots in Dublin yesterday evening.

The forecast for today suggests that, along with scattered heavy showers, fresh and gusty winds will continue for the day, making it feel colder than it is. However the wind and showers will begin to ease towards the evening.
