A 33-YEAR-OLD MAN has been remanded in custody after being charged in connection with the death of his mother in an assault at the weekend in Galway.
Milena Ostojic, aged 65, of 52 Claí Mór, Ballybrit, on the east of Galway city, died at University Hospital Galway in the early hours of Saturday morning.
She sustained serious wounds after being assaulted at her home on Friday night.
Her son Dubravko Ostojic, of no fixed abode, was brought before a special sitting of Galway District Court this evening where he was refused bail by Judge Gerard Furlong.
Ostojic is charged with assaulting his mother. He did not speak during the brief court hearing.
A bail application by solicitor John Martin was refused on a number of grounds by Judge Furlong.
Detective Garda Gerry Carroll said the accused was charged at Galway Garda Station at 5.47pm on Sunday evening. He said that the investigation into the death of Milena Ostojie was ongoing and that further charges may follow.
Judge Gerard Furlong remanded the accused in custody to appear by videolink at Galway District Court on Monday morning.
He requested that the accused be provided with all appropriate medical and psychiatric attention upon arrival at his place of detention and that a psychiatric report be compiled as soon as possible.
