A NUMBER OF Garda units and the Garda helicopter were involved in a chase in the early hours of this morning after a house was burgled in Laois.

At about 1am this morning, gardaí were alerted that a burglary had taken place at a house in Mountmellick, Co Laois and that a car belonging to the owner of the house had been stolen.

A Ford Mondeo was also seen close to the scene of the burglary.

Local gardaí alerted national units – including the Regional Support Unit and the the Air Support Unit (Garda helicopter).

The car drove along the M7 motorway towards Dublin and refused to stop for gardaí.

It was later stopped on Cherry Orchard Avenue in Ballyfermot, Dublin.

A man (22) was arrested and taken to Portlaoise Garda station where he was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

A short time later, a Ford Mondeo was stopped at nearby Cherry Orchard Court and the male driver (22) was arrested.

He was also taken to Portlaoise Garda station and detained under the same Act as the first man.

One man was charged and will appear before Portlaoise District Court at 10.30am tomorrow morning.

A second man was released without charge and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Comments have been disabled as a person has been charged and is due before the courts.
