Irish actors Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal nominated for 2026 Golden Globes awards

Derry-born Maggie O’Farrell, who authored the book on which the film is based, received a nomination in the Best Screenplay category.

JESSIE BUCKLEY and Paul Mescal have been nominated for Golden Globes for their roles in Hamnet.

The film was also nominated for Best Screenplay (Motion Picture) and Best Direction for Chloé Zhao’s work.

The period drama follows William Shakespeare (Mescal) and his wife Agnes (Buckley) as they come to terms with the death of their son Hamnet, which inspires Shakespeare to write the masterpiece Hamlet.

It’s based on the book by author Maggie O’Farrell, who is from Coleraine, Co Derry. She got a nod alongside Zhao in the Best Screenplay category.

Kerry-born Buckley is nominated in the Best Female Actor in a Motion Picture category.

The others in the category are Jennifer Lawrence (Die My Love), Renate Reinsve (Sentimental Value), Julia Roberts (After the Hunt), Tessa Thompson (Hedda), and Eva Victor (Sorry, Baby).

The music for Hamnet, composed by Max Richter, is nominated for Best Original Score.

Mescal, who is from Kildare, will go up against five other big names in the Best Supporting Actor category.

They are Benicio Del Toro and Sean Penn (One Battle After Another), Jacob Elordi (Frankenstein), Adam Sandler (Jay Kelly) and Stellan Skarsgard (Sentimental Value).

Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another leads the nominations, with nine in total, including best picture, director and screenwriter.

Not far behind was the Norwgian film Sentimental Value, which scored eight nominations, including best picture and screenplay.

Frankenstein did well. Its director Guillermo Del Torro, as well as actors Elordi and Oscar Isaac, were nominated. The film is also among the best picture and best score nominees.

Unsurprisingly, the musical film Wicked: For Good scooped a number of nominations, with stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande getting nods.
