Smuggled

Not 'foil containers' but in fact 1.1 million illegal cigarettes

Revenue intercepted the container at Dublin Port yesterday.

MORE THAN A million illegally smuggled cigarettes were seized at Dublin Port yesterday.

Revenue estimate that the value of the haul is €516,000 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €430,000 in taxes.

The ‘Benson & Hedges’ branded cigarettes were concealed in a roll-on roll-off container that arrived into Dublin Port from the United Arab Emirates and were falsely declared as ‘foil containers’.

Revenue say that they are working with agencies both in Ireland and abroad to following the seizure which came as part of ongoing investigations into the organised crime gangs involved in smuggling.
