THE MOTHER OF two-year-old James Bulger, who was murdered by two schoolboys in 1993, said she is “devastated” after her son’s grave was vandalised this week.

James was abducted, tortured, and murdered by 10-year-olds Robert Thompson and Jon Venables on 12 February 1993 in Merseyside in England. Both boys were found guilty of James’s murder and sentenced to prison.

They are now living under new identities, despite Venables continuing to reoffend. 

James’s mother Denise Fergus runs the James Bulger Memorial Trust, which benefits and supports young people disadvantaged as the result of being victims of crime or bullying.

In a post online, Fergus shared that James’s grave had been vandalised, with the two cherubs on each side of his headstone having their heads smashed off.

“Today I felt my heart break once again,” she wrote online. She said she had been informed of the vandalism by a woman who was walking her dog in the graveyard.

“We rushed down there to find the cherubs each side of his headstone had been smashed to pieces.” She asked anyone with any information to contact the local police or the Trust.

“I’m devastated someone could be so cruel and hurtful to my James,” she said.

A GoFundMe set up to pay for the repair of James’s grave has raised over £16,000.
