THIS MONTH, ONE Dublin shop is offering to dry clean men’s and women’s suits for anyone who has a job interview coming up.
The promotion has gained huge support from readers so far, who appreciate the gesture for the many people trying to break into employment, as the economy slowly recovers.
Presentation and attire is one thing, but there’s plenty besides that causes anxiety when going for a job, apart from not getting it, of course.
So today we’re asking – What’s your biggest worry when applying for a job?

Come on come on come on come on…you know this entire thing is a bs exercise…I know it is…and you know were both expected to play games in here, lets not lie to ourselves why were doing it ok?
I’m gonna be honest about where I worked, where I went to college all that but don’t expect me to VOLUNTEER my biggest weaknesses ffsake…
One job, HR speil on their website said they are ”staff focused” and always try to accomidate staffs lifestyles and are ”realistic” about things like the roster. So come to my first Sunday shift I look at the roster and see it says Sunday 9-6. I told them on a Sunday the first bus from my area leaves at 10, so could I do 11-8 or something? ‘
‘No.”
”I can’t physically make it in though”
”well that’s your problem, you’re on the roster we expect you to be there”
A few years ago I applied to loads of different places trying to get a trade apprenticeship , well I had 3 interviews in one day , I was 10 minutes into an interview for an electrician before I realised it wasn’t a plumbing job , and me talking complete rubbish about how much I love plumbing
have to agree I had an interview where the interviewer kept me waiting 20 minutes never apologised was extremely rude and contradicted me several times on a job i had been doing for years.
I turned down a job offer once after an interview. One of the interviewers would have been a manager. He looked dirty and sweaty and very unkempt. That wouldn’t have bothered me really but when I went to shake his hand he looked horrified at the thought of touching my hand then gave a light shake and proceeded to wipe his hand off his pants afterwards. None of the rest of the panel even batted an eyelid. Still, not a big deal. What pssed me off is he “corrected” my already correct answers with a smug attitude. Made up my mind halfway through that I wasn’t that desperate!
Being paid the same wage or less than I was earning 10 years ago because employers know that there’s someone willing to work for that in the current climate.
That and being on an outsourced contract with no job security.
Getting paid 10K-20k less than the other people in the placing doing the same job because they were lucky enough to be hired ‘when there were good times’
Remember going for 2 jobs in a company in the space of 6 months. Ended up working alongside them for an affiliate company. They were absolutely fking useless. The problem was, they talked the talk in the interview better than i did. Interviews are a silly way of gauging weather you’re right for the job or not
Applying for non existsnt positions ! So many people work on contract and the contracts have to be readvertised but its only a excerise in covering their ass’s and total waste of peoples time
‘Not having enough experience’ would be good to include… Chicken and egg – can’t get a good job without experience and can’t get good experience without a job… Tis tough out there but perseverance brings success:-D
A smug interviewer would bring out the worst in me, – can’t help it, I was self-employed & self-sufficient for a long, long time, until the clowns in charge decided to flood the country with unlimited cheap labour from the E.U.
I’d love to know what’s really going on…
I had an interview where I was asked to do a presentation for the job and answer specific questions.I wasn’t used to presentations.Happened to prepare myself well and when I arrived at the office there was no projector and screen available to me!I was told by interviewer to sit down there now and just go through the handout which I luckily printed..Interview was over in 20mins and was supposed to 45mins long. And that was the CEO of the company – enough said!!
The same goes for experience over education. I know someone that got called for an interview and I wasn’t. I am more than capable of doing the job as I have been doing similar for years they had only ever worked in spar/centra type job so altough thwy could also do the job my experience was more relevant but because they had the word Degree in there cv they were called and I wasn’t. The said degree was not even close to being in the same industry as the job so shouldn’t be relevant but HR scan for specific words and ignore experience.
Can’t say I’d agree there. I’ve worked as a recruiter, manager and gone for plenty of job interviews down the years myself and I would say work experience is #1 for employers over qualifications. The exception being for IT/Technical roles.
I have seen people with degrees thick as two short planks… Degree means little to me, almost anybody can finish college with bit of self control and patience. If you’re actually good at what you do can be checked asking good and relevant interview questions (not what’s your weakness or what’s your hobby…) and asking person to sit mockup test at the end of interview if possible. That should give good idea. Also if they managed to hold on to some jobs for longer tells me a lot (good thing of course).
My worry is something I’m going through now. I left a great company selling something I found hard to get interested in to a not so great company selling something I’m passionate about.
Not exactly on topic but a lot of interviewers forget that it’s a two way process and that they have to sell the company/position as well. I went through a 3 stage interview process previously. First two interviews were all about me which was fair enough. The third one should have been their cue to start selling. Instead I was kept waiting for 20 minutes, the interviewer didn’t even have my CV ready, he kept looking at his phone/PC throughout and got the hump with my probing questions. So later that day I told the recruiter I was pulling out – thanks but no thanks.
Absolutely right Glangan. Yes you have to sell yourself but the company needs to lay their cards on the table too. Be wary folks, lot of interviewers who can tell two different lies out of either side of their mouth at the same time.
(1) The job actually exists.
(2) You get a acknowledgement that you applied
(3) Recruitment firms actually compile a proper job spec
(4) The recruiter does not ask you what your salary expectations are. Acccept that the person in front of you is aware and happy with the salary offered.
(5) That recruitment firms make sure that jobs they are advertising that have been filled are removed from the job web sites….I got a reply from one recruitment agency saying the job i applied for was filled and ad should not pop up and the same job is still been advertised today.
Thats just for starters
What about being over qualified when you are older and applying for a job when your prospective boss would have less knowledge? You are resented and ignored
The biggest worry applying for a job is that it will often go to someone who knows the right people!
If I applied for a better position where I work I would be afraid I wouldn’t get it because I speak my mind honestly and don’t kiss the right Arses to get promotion! !
It’s not what you know or your ability-its who you know and kissing arse that counts!!
