'People are shocked and saddened': Murder probe launched following death of elderly farmer in Kerry

Anthony O’Mahoney died this morning following a collision with a transporter.

A MURDER INVESTIGATION has been launched after man was killed following an incident involving a teleporter vehicle in north Kerry this morning.

A man has been arrested in connection with the incident, which took place this morning in Rattoo, Ballyduff, Co Kerry.

Gardaí were called to the scene of a collision involving the teleporter and a car at about 8.45am this morning.

The driver of the car, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He has been named locally as Anthony O’Mahoney.

The driver of the teleporter was not injured.

A teleporter – also known as telescopic handler - is a lifting vehicle used widely in construction or agriculture.

A man in his 60s was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained at Listowel Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

‘People are shocked and saddened’

Local councillor Robert Beasley told that people in the quiet rural community were “shocked and saddened” at the news of the death.

“People are numbed that this would happen in such a tight-knit community,” said Beasley.

“It’s very unfortunate that this would happen in a locality like this.

My sympathies go out to the man’s family.

Anthony O’Mahoney was a well-known farmer from the Ballyduff area with lands in Rattoo.

The man arrested is believed to be from the Rattoo area.

The Garda Technical Bureau and the State Pathologist were due to carry out an investigation following the incident.
