LIMERICK TRIO KINGFISHR have secured this year’s Christmas number one with their song Killeagh.

According to the Irish Recorded Music Association, the body responsible for managing the Irish charts, the folk band beat festive favourites such as Wham’s Last Christmas and Mariah Carey’s All I Want for Christmas is You to take the top spot.

Their album Halcyon is also at the top of the albums chart.

An ode to the home village and GAA club of Kingfishr’s guitarist Eoin Fitzgibbon, Killeagh first reached number one in May.

It was also Ireland’s most-streamed song of the year on Spotify.

Reacting to the news, Kingfishr said: “It’s been the best year of our lives. We’ll never be able to thank people for what they’ve done for us. Dreams really do come true.”

Second to Halcyon is folk trio Amble’s Reverie, which was the biggest selling and most streamed Irish album of the year, featuring tracks like Lonely Island, Schoolyard Days and Mary’s Pub.

Dublin rock band Fontaines DC are also in the mix, with their acclaimed album Romance in the top ten on Christmas week.

In the UK, Kylie Minogue secured her first Christmas number one with her festive single XMAS.

It’s the first time in eight years that the spot hasn’t been taken by Wham! or LadBaby.

The UK Official Charts said the Australian pop star is also the first woman to have number one singles across four different decades - the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2020s.

“It’s hard to put into words how special this feels. Being Christmas Number 1 really is the most wonderful gift,” Minogue said.

“I’m so thankful to everyone who’s been listening and sharing the love and I’m wishing you all a very Merry Christmas!”
