WHAT’S THE STORY?
1. Ireland’s tax deal with Apple is to be investigated by the European Commission. Gulp.
2. THE most upsetting of offences was relayed by the Child Care Law Reporting Project today. It tells how the father of a very young girl was arrested just as he was about to sexually abuse her on camera for a live web chat. This and other case histories in the report highlight the dire plight of at-risk children in this country.
3. WAS the Garda Ombudsman Commission bugged or not? The Cooke Report says there is no evidence of it; today, GSOC‘s chairperson has questions about “unlawful intrusion”. New Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald, meanwhile, says at “least” seven people could have leaked the bugging claims to the media. AT LEAST seven.
4. WELL, this doesn’t inspire confidence – two aircraft “narrowly” avoided having a mid-air collision over Knock Airport last year, it has emerged.

GOOD news for those sitting the Leaving Cert at the moment (sorry about the sunshine, folks) – the first-ever performance review of Ireland’s higher education system shows that it is one worth getting into. Education Minister Ruairi Quinn calls it “one of the success stories in Ireland in recent years”. Would you agree?
