Young man who died in swimming accident in Kerry river named as Padraig O'Rahilly

Padriag O’Rahilly pronounced deceased at the scene.

LAST UPDATE | 14 Aug

A MAN WHO died after getting into difficulty in the River Flesk in Kerry this week has been named locally as Padraig (Paudie) O’Rahilly.

The incident happened at around 3.30pm on Tuesday, behind houses and a soccer pitch in the Woodlawn area of Killarney.

Paramedics, the fire service and a doctor attended the scene, while people from the nearby soccer pitch also provided assistance.

Mr O’Rahilly, who was in his late 20s and from Barraduff, Co Kerry, was pronounced dead at the scene.

He is understood to have worked in Killarney and was one of three children.

He also formerly played for Glenflesk GAA club,  who paid tribute to Mr O’Rahilly in a statement.

“Paudie was a popular team mate on all his teams, he loved the game of football and his enthusiasm on the field endeared him to all,” the statement said.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to Margaret, Liam, Valerie, Maureen, Nathan and all his family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam dílis.”

It is believed he may have been caught in a whirlpool in the river.

Locals say the River Flesk is usually shallow, but there are spots where the depth can drop suddenly.

Another man who had been paddling in the water with Mr O’Rahilly managed to make it to safety.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out in due course, and a file will be prepared for the coroner.

Investigations are ongoing.
