Man (30s) arrested under mental health legislation after incident in Ballina

The incident was “peacefully resolved” after local garda negotiators and several other garda units attended the scene.

A MAN HAS been arrested after gardaí responded to a reported incident of criminal damage at a property in Co Mayo. 

Gardaí responded to the incident in Ballina town shortly after 6pm yesterday. The man, aged in his 30s, then barricaded himself inside the family residence. 

An Garda Síochána initiated its Operational Command protocol, appointing an on-scene commander.

Local garda negotiators from the National Negotiators Unit, along with several other garda units, attended the scene and a cordon was put in place.

After negotiations, the incident was peacefully resolved shortly before 11.30pm and the man was arrested under mental health legislation.

A garda spokesperson said that investigations into the matter are ongoing.
