25-year-old man charged with murder of his mother and assault of his father in Cork

The couple have been named locally as Stella and Brian Gallagher.

LAST UPDATE | 19 Nov 2025

A MAN HAS been charged with the murder of his mother and the assault causing harm of his father at a suburb in Cork on Monday.

David Gallagher, 25, of Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough was charged before Cork District Court this morning.

During the brief hearing the accused, dressed in a purple jumper and light grey tracksuit trousers, did not speak.

Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes, Blackrock Garda Station, told the court that he charged the accused at the Bridewell Garda Station earlier today.

The garda said that the accused did not make any reply after the charges were read to him.

Solicitor for Gallagher, Shane Collins Daly, said that his client had been seen by a doctor every eight hours while in garda custody and was given medication.

Collins Daly said that as the charge was of murder he would not be able to apply for bail.

He asked the court to direct that there would be an urgent medical and psychiatric evaluation carried out at Cork Prison.

Judge John King remanded Gallagher in custody to appear via video link on 26 November.

The judge also directed that medical and psychiatric care be given to the accused on his arrival at Cork Prison.

Legal aid was assigned as Gallagher was said not to be working.
