Man (40s) killed in collision involving crane and two vans named locally

The HSA has been notified and will conduct an investigation.

A MAN WHO died following a collision this morning in Co Offaly involving a crane and two vans has been named locally.

The collision occurred on the R401 at Drumcooly at around 6.15am.

According to gardaí, a crane mounted on the back of a truck came loose while the vehicle was travelling down the road, and struck both vans.

43-year-old Stephen Mooney, an Edenderry native and the driver of one of the vans, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The male driver, aged in his 30s, of the other van was brought to Midland Regional Hospital at Tullamore for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The road is closed pending examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local diversions are in place.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) has been notified and will conduct its own investigation.

Gardaí are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 6am and 6:30am this morning are asked to make this footage available.
