This is now the second best-selling videogame of all time

But Minecraft has a long way to go before it takes the top spot.

MINECRAFT IS NOW the second best-selling video game of all time, having sold 106 million to date

Microsoft announced the news and revealed it has been selling an average of 53,000 copies per day since the start of 2016.

The game leapfrogs over Wii Sports which sold 82.78 million copies, but is still way behind Tetris which has sold 495 million copies.

Launched in 2009, Minecraft’s popularity is down to the level of creativity and freedom its open-world gameplay offers.

While it offers a survival mode, the main attraction is its creative mode which allows players to build structures and worlds of anything.

Some have used it to build citiesstructures, countries and other works, while others use for education purposes, sometimes as a way of recreating historical events.

While it’s seen as a game for younger players, the average age of players is 29 years old and more than 40 million people play it every month.

The company behind it, Mojang, was bought by Microsoft for €1.9 billion in 2014. The game is available on PC, Mac, major consoles and is one of the top selling apps in both the App Store and Google Play store.
