Detainee dead and two wounded in shooting at US immigration facility

Engravings found on unspent bullet casings suggest the shooter may have been targeting US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

LAST UPDATE | 24 Sep

A DETAINEE WAS killed and two are in critical condition following a sniper attack on a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Dallas, Texas, officials have said.

The gunman was found dead with a self-inflicted gun wound after shooting “indiscriminately” on the building from a nearby roof, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said in a statement.

It said: “The shooter fired indiscriminately at the ICE building, including at a van in the sallyport where the victims were shot.”

“Three detainees were shot. One detainee is deceased, and the other two are in critical condition.”

The FBI have suggested the shooter was targeting ICE, the agency chiefly responsible for carrying out President Donald Trump’s pledge to expel millions of undocumented migrants.

The immigration agency has been criticised over its use of armed, masked agents to conduct raids in public places against undocumented migrants.

Trump blamed “radical left Democrats” in a post on Truth Social.

He said they are “demonising Law Enforcement, calling for ICE to be demolished, and comparing ICE Officers to ‘Nazis’.”

The identity of the deceased victim has not been released, but the Mexican foreign ministry said one of those wounded is a Mexican citizen.

The gunman’s name has not been released by the authorities, but multiple media reports identified him as Joshua Jahn, 29.

The ICE facility where the shooting occurred processes detainees before they are transferred to a long-term detention centre.

With additional reporting from Diarmuid Pepper and AFP.
