Murder suspect gave rosary beads to gardaí for victim's mother

THE TRIAL OF A 25-YEAR-OLD man accused of murdering Shane Geoghegan has heard he asked gardaí to give rosary beads to the victim’s mother.
Limerick rugby player Shane Geoghegan, 28, was killed in a suspected case of mistaken identity near his home in Dooradoyle.
Barry Doyle, with addresses at Portland Row, Dublin, and Hyde Road, Limerick, has pleaded not guilty to the murder on 9 November, 2008.
The trial heard earlier that he admitted shooting Geoghegan seven or eight times when he was interviewed by gardaí about the death.
Giving evidence yesterday, Detective Garda Mark Phillips said Doyle had removed the rosary beads from around his own neck and handed them to gardaí to be sent to Geoghegan’s mother, the Limerick Leader reports.
He would not provide information on who else was in the stolen car used to escape from the scene of the killing.
