Apple has announced two new iPhones

There’s also a giant iPad on the way.

APPLE HAS ANNOUNCED the latest in its iPhone range, the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.

The device is largely similar in design to its predecessor, the iPhone 6, but contains a number of hardware updates.

“They look familiar, but we have changed everything about these iPhones,” chief executive Tim Cook said at a San Francisco media event.

One of the key new features is called 3D touch – previously referred to as Force Touch – which responds to pressure exerted on the screen to allow users to look inside messages and applications.

The new iPhones will use the upcoming iOS 9 operating system. Prices start at $199 and $299, with an Irish release expected next month.

The 6S will include the 4.7-inch (about 12-centimeter) display of its predecessor and the 6S Plus — one of the more popular handsets in the “phablet category” — has a 5.5-inch screen.

But the devices have more powerful processors that allow for improved graphics, and a new aluminum body.

This includes:

  • 12MP iSight camera
  • 5MP front-facing camera
  • Faster Touch ID
  • A faster A9 processor
  • 3D Touch (previously called Force Touch)

Apple also announced the iPad Pro, the biggest ever in its line of tablets.

Cook described it as “the biggest new in iPad since the iPad”.

It has a full sized keyboard, split-screen capabilities and it’s 12.9-inches.

The iPad Pro’s A9X chip is also 1.8x faster its predecessor, bringing the same level of performance as a desktop computer, Phil Schiller claims, even going as far as to say it’s faster than 80% of the portable computers sold recently.

It comes in silver, gold and space grey and costs $799 for 32GB, $99 for pencil and $169 for keyboard. It will be released in November and will likely be a straight swap in euros (€799 for 32GB).

The device comes equipped with an improved audio system and keyboard, as well as a more powerful battery.
