Find out about the symptoms of breast cancer, and when not to wait for screening.
BreastCheck’s breast screening is for healthy women who don’t have symptoms of breast cancer. If you have symptoms, contact your GP without delay and they will arrange the right follow-up treatment for you. You shouldn’t wait for a breast screening appointment.
It’s important to know what is normal for your body, and that includes being breast aware. That way, you’ll notice if any unusual changes occur between breast screenings.
Getting into the habit of checking your breasts will help you notice changes, and should be done at least once a month.
The symptoms of breast cancer are:
- a lump in either breast
- change to either of your nipples (discharge, rash, appearance, e.g. sunken into your breast
- a lump or swelling in either of your armpits
- change in the size or shape of one or both breasts
- dimpling on the skin of your breasts
An easy way for you to feel your breast is when you’re in the bath or shower. As well as feeling for changes, using a mirror will help you look for changes.
