1. Opportunistic burglar
There are two types of burglars operating in Ireland today. The first, and most common type, is the opportunistic burglar. This common crook will spend between 90 seconds and four minutes trying to gain entry into a home. If he doesn’t he will move on.
2. Professional burglar
Recently however, Fairco have encountered a new type of burglar who plan and execute their crimes professionally. These crooks will take time to drive around an area and identify 10-12 houses which fit their ideal criteria, which may include the houses of elderly people who regularly go to mass or the shops and leave the house unattended, houses that are surrounded by hedges or may have large vehicles parked outside to block the view from the street.
This new generation typically operate in gangs. The burglary gang will station a number of members armed with walkie talkies at strategic points in the locality to act as lookouts. This includes monitoring the local Garda station, giving the intruders the maximum amount of time before interruption.
