9-year-old girl dies after sand hole collapse at US beach

The young girl was digging a hole between three and five feet deep when the sand collapsed, according to local officials.

AUTHORITIES IN THE US state of Oregon are investigating after a 9-year-old girl died on a visit to a beach with her family on Friday.

The young girl, named yesterday as Isabel Grace Franks, became trapped after a sand cave collapsed on her in Lincoln City, the Portland Tribune reported, quoting local officials.

First responders arrived at the scene at around 5pm on Friday to find a group of people trying to dig the girl out, Lincoln City Police Lt. Jerry Palmer is quoted as saying.

“The child came out of the hole unconscious and not breathing,” said Palmer.

Officers began CPR, but the girl was later pronounced dead in hospital.

According to another local news source, Portland’s KGW, witnesses said the girl was buried for around five minutes.

The North Lincoln Fire Department said she was digging a hole between three and five feet deep, a few metres from the ocean, according to KGW.com’s account of the incident.

Photos of a makeshift memorial at the scene of the tragedy have also been posted online.
