Dream car of the week: Porsche 911 Carrera S Coupe

Every week we bring you a dream car, you know, the one you’d buy if you won the lottery.

THE 911 IS Porsche’s most famous model and after more than a half-century it still outshines most of its rivals. Only now, this model is more powerful and more efficient making it the perfect, everyday dream car.

Outside:

Look at it! Just look at it. Take a moment to appreciate its iconic and enduring shape.

Those familiar headlights now feature Porsche’s signature four-point LED daytime driving lights. Those front air intakes are home to active vanes that open and close to improve efficiency.

The ever-so-attractive two-door coupé shape slopes elegantly to the rear, which has low down air vents behind the wheels allowing hot air to escape from the intercoolers and the engine deck lid has a vertical grille that directs air into the engine and intercoolers and there is a twin sports exhaust system with mid-mounted tailpipes. It’s just gorgeous to look at from all angles.

Inside:

The cabin is smart, tidy and user-friendly as well as being roomy and sturdy and luxurious, too. There are a lot of buttons on the centre console, which responds to finger gestures and taps, the steering wheel feels great and the heated, electronic, 14-way adjustable sports seats are comfy yet supportive.

The rear seats drop-down to provide some luggage space and there is a surprisingly good sized cargo well under the bonnet, although you probably won’t fit your weekly shopping in there.

Under the hood:

The engine sounds splendid and has a wonderful crescendo that builds right up to the top of the rev range and with that sports exhaust it pops and crackles on the overrun, adding a lovely texture to the sound and giddiness to the lucky driver.

Compared to the 1960s original, today’s 911 retains a “flat” six-cylinder engine, positioned behind the rear axle, only this 911 is now turbocharged, the results of which is a quiet and refined car which is great for everyday use, so no need to hide this baby away in a garage.

And the reason for adopting turbocharging in the first place? To improve efficiency and meet various European regulations and requirements and now the 911 has a claimed 12 per cent improvement in efficiency, with a combined economy figure of 7.7 litres/100km (36.7mpg) with emissions of just 174g/km.

The 3.0-litre flat-six turbocharged petrol engine is mated to a seven-speed PDK transmission and produces 420hp at 6,500rpm and the 500Nm of max torque peaks at just 1700rpm making the car drivable from the get-go, with lots of acceleration to hand.

Speaking of which, this car can sprint from 0 to 100km/h in 4.1 seconds or 3.9 seconds in Sports Plus mode and has a top speed of 306km/h (190mph). You’ll never be late for the school run again.
