Rent freezes

There were concerns that residential rents would increase before the start of the two-year rental freeze, which was introduced this week by the government as part of a package of measures to help fix the rental market.

However, the government and the Private Residential Tenancies Board (PRTB) says the new 24-month period will mean anybody whose rent has been increased this year will not face another hike until 2017. Property owners will also be required to give longer notice to tenants of any rental increases.

The government has called the changes one of “the most significant overhaul of tenants’ rights in the state”.

Homeless crisis

Leading housing NGOs have accused the government of delaying action on the homeless crisis. Six national homeless organisation have come together to warn that the government’s failure to bring in rent certainty will force more households into homelessness.
