Who's backing who in the race for the Áras?

From Daniel O’Donnell to Bertie Ahern, public figures across the country have publicly shared who they’re going to vote for this week.

FOUR DAYS TO go until the public votes for who they want to be the next president of Ireland and dozens of public figures – from Daniel O’Donnell to Bertie Ahern – have made it clear who they’re giving their vote to.

Heather Humphreys has been active on social media thanking well-known people who have backed her, while Catherine Connolly threw a gig last night with some of her famous supporters playing.

Humphreys thanked Singer Daniel O’Donnell for his support, after he revealed he “probably” will vote for Humphrey’s in an interview with the Irish Independent.

“I don’t know anything personally about either of them — but I suppose I just feel that Heather represents more of what I think,” he said.

Another well known figure to come out for Humphrey is Bertie Ahern who said she will be getting his vote now that himself and Jim Gavin aren’t in the race.

Fianna Faíl TD and Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien was out canvassing in Howth, Co Dublin with the candidate last week.

Another boost for Humphreys came when former Tánaistí Mary Harney, Mary Coughlan and Francis Fitzgerald all gave her their backing.

Both former Fianna Fáil politicians, Harney was in office from 1997 to 2006 and Coughlan was in from 2008 to 2011. Former Fine Gael Tánaiste Fitzgerald held the position between 2016 and 2017.

The Taoiseach Micheal Martin also said that he plans to vote for Humphreys, although he made it clear this is not the formal position of Fianna Fáil.

Ceol for Connolly

Last night Connolly hosted Ceol for Connolly, a gig in Vicar Street which featured several big names who are supporting her campaign.

The Mary Wallopers, Christy Moore, and Madra Salach headlined last night’s concert.

Though not able to vote in the election, Belfast rap-duo Kneecap have backed Connolly too.

“Vote Connolly….cause we can’t,” they said on an X post.

Irish actors Liam Cunningham and Stephen Rea have also endorsed Connolly.

“This is what an Irish President sounds like. It’s a no brainer. She’s the one,” Cunningham said on X when he retweeted a clip of Connolly speaking at a debate.

There is an artists for Connolly campaign group, members such as musician Sharon Shannon and singer Síomha have publicly backed the independent candidate.

As well as artists, Connolly has been backed by a coalition of political parties on the left, including The Social Democrats, Labour, People Before Profit-Solidarity and Sinn Féin.

Leaders of these parties have been strong advocates for the candidate, while former party members such as ex-leader for Labour Brendan Howlin have also backed Connolly.

Her campaign had a boost when Howliin came out to support her despite Heather Humphreys sharing a photograph with him the weekend before.
