RTÉ received 10 formal complaints about Sydney Rose's abortion comments
Brianna Parkins told Dáithí Ó Sé she would like to see a referendum on abortion.
RTÉ HAS RECEIVED ten formal complaints about the comments Brianna Parkins made on the Rose of Tralee Monday night.
Brianna Parkins kicked off a heated debate on social media with her remarks during Monday night’s broadcast, telling host Dáithí Ó Sé:
“I think we can do better here in Ireland. I think it is time to give women a say on their own reproductive rights. I would love to see a referendum on the Eighth [Amendment] coming up soon. That would be my dream.”
A spokesperson for RTÉ told TheJournal.ie that by close of business yesterday it had received ten formal complaints.
The spokesperson’s statement said that as a formal complaints process was under way the “RTÉ will not be making any comment”.
RTÉ says it didn’t edit clip
Directly after Parkins made the comment, there were concerns that RTÉ had temporarily removed the segment from their online player, but the broadcaster later confirmed that this was not the case.

Her interview was in the final part of the show and was published to Player in the running order sequence – after Kilkenny and before Queensland. It is the same as the broadcast version. No edits or changes were made to the Player version at any time.
8th Amendment
The 8th Amendment of the Constitution Act, 1983 was effected after a referendum that year which asked Irish people to vote on the State’s abortion laws.
It acknowledges the right to life of the unborn, equating it with the mother’s right to life.
The Cabinet last month approved plans for a Citizens’ Assembly to address abortion and other issues, with the 100 member group due to hold its first meeting in November.
