Sarah McInerney to join Morning Ireland as RTÉ makes further line-up tweaks

The new line-ups come on foot of the recent launch of RTÉ Radio 1’s new weekday schedule.

RTÉ HAS CONFIRMED new presenters across a number of its flagship programmes this morning.

It follows a recent shakeup of the radio schedules at the national broadcaster.

Tommy Meskill, currently London correspondent for RTÉ, will be brought home to be the new co-presenter of the Six One News with Sharon Tobin.

Sarah McInerney and Justin McCarthy will join Gavin Jennings and Audrey Carville as regular presenters of Morning Ireland on RTÉ Radio 1.

Paul Cunningham, who is presently a political correspondent, will now present Sunday’s This Week program on RTÉ Radio 1, taking over from Justin McCarthy. He will also join Fran McNulty and others on the Behind the  Story podcast during the week.

The new line-ups come on foot of the recent launch of RTÉ Radio 1’s new weekday schedule.

Meskill said it’s “a huge honour” to take on the role of co-presenter on the Six One.

“Its strength depends on the work of almost the entire newsroom, which is why it’s such a cherished part of what we do. I’m really looking forward to getting started and being part of a programme that continues to bring accurate, engaging and trusted news to our audience.”

McInerney also expressed her excitement for her new role at Morning Ireland, saying she “can’t wait to get started”.

Meskill will begin taking up the new role this month. This role was previously held by David McCullagh, now the host of morning show Today with David McCullagh.

Sarah McInerney will begin on Morning Ireland in the coming weeks, and Justin McCarthy will be continuing now as a permanent presenter on the programme.

These roles were previously held by Mary Wilson, who retired in September, and Áine Lawlor, who stepped back from the programme recently.

Director of RTÉ News and Current Affairs, Deirdre McCarthy said of the new appointments: “These flagship news programmes are among our most-watched and listened-to, representing the best of our daily news gathering and trusted public service journalism.

“Tommy, Sarah, Justin and Paul join our dedicated RTÉ News and Current Affairs presentation team, who strive every day to bring, honestly and clearly, with integrity and credibility, the stories that matter to you.

“They are all accomplished journalists, who will continue to ask the probing questions, hold those in power to account, and represent the public interest.”
