Roscommon man charged over Sarah Staunton murder

The 28-year-old mother of two was found dead in her home in rural Mayo on Saturday.

A MAN ARRESTED on Saturday night in connection with the murder of a woman in her 20s in Co Mayo has appeared in court this afternoon.

The body of 28-year-old mother of two Sarah Staunton was discovered at her home near Mayo Abbey in Castlebar at around noon on Saturday.

The man, aged 22, was arrested several hours later,  and held for questioning at Castlebar Garda Station. He appeared before a special sitting of Ballina District Court this afternoon, where he was charged with murder.

Midwest Radio names the accused as Ray Gralton, with an address at Mount Prospect, Roscommon. He has been remanded in custody to appear again before Harristown District Court, Castlerea on Friday morning.

Gardaí upgraded their enquiry to a murder investigation yesterday evening, following a post-mortem examination.
