A WOMAN IN her 40s has died in hospital after she was seriously injured in a collision with a lorry on Friday.

The woman, a pedestrian, was hit by the lorry at Station Roundabout, Port Road, Letterkenny, Co Donegal on Friday afternoon. She was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment but passed away yesterday.

Her death brings the total number of road deaths in Ireland this year to 43.

In Terenure Cross in south Co Dublin, a woman, also a pedestrian in her 40s, was seriously injured after she was hit by a bus this morning.

Gardaí and emergency services were alerted to the incident shortly after 10am. The woman was taken to Beaumont Hospital. No other injuries were reported.

The road remains closed at this time as it is inspected by investigators.

As gardaí appeal for information regarding the two collisions, it continues to enact its policing operation for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend.

The operation began at 7am on Thursday 2 April and will continue until 7am tomorrow morning.

In that time, over 3,000 drivers were detected for speeding offences. Over 310 people were detected for holding a mobile phone while driving or not wearing a seatbelt.

A total of 138 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.

Gardaí released a short list of the more extreme speeding offences committed yesterday, with one driver caught going 138km/hr in a 50km/hr zone on Cashel Road in Cahir, Co Tipperary.
