Every weekday evening, TheJournal.ie brings you the five things you really need to know by 5pm.
1. #RONAN KERR: Detectives investigating the murder of Constable Ronan Kerr in a car bombing at the weekend have arrested a second man. This man has been connected in relation to the discovery of a significant arms haul in Tyrone on Tuesday – but also in connection with Ronan Kerr’s death.
2. #CORRIB: One of the women at the centre of the controversy over remarks about rape apparently made by gardai at the Corrib Gas project has waived her anonymity. Jerrie Ann Sullivan, a postgraduate student from Dublin, claimed today that gardai had leaked her name and address to reporters.
3. #OUCH! The European Central Bank has announced a .25 per cent rise in the interest rate – and a further series of hikes is predicted before the rest of the year is out.
4. #JAPAN: There were prayers for Japan just a short time ago when a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of the country. Mercifully, a tsunami alert that had been issued for the northeastern coast has just been lifted.
5. #BRAZIL: At least 13 people have been killed in a shooting at a school in Brazil. The gunman is among the dead but it is not clear if he killed himself or was killed by police.
