Sharp frost will see temperatures plunge to -4 over coming nights

2026 is underway with a cold snap affecting much of the country.

TEMPERATURES WILL PLUMMET to as low as -4 in the coming nights for parts of Ireland.

Drivers in Northern Ireland are also advised to exercise “extreme caution” when on the road after wintry overnight weather.

Untreated roads have seen the PSNI warn of “treacherous” driving conditions, as parts of the UK see snow and ice warnings for the start of 2026.

While it will remain dry and often sunny in Ireland, Met Éireann has warned of “sharp to severe” frosts developing overnight.

This may be slow to clear during the daytime and also see tricky driving conditions.

Tonight will see temperatures fall to -2 in parts, but Saturday and Sunday night are both expected to see temperatures hit lows of -4.

Some freezing fog patches also in store according to Met Éireann.

The forecaster has outlined that temperatures will climb back to between 1 and 6 degrees on Sunday daytime before plunging again when the sun goes down.

The harsh cold is expected to return again on Monday night but it will turn less cold then as cloud builds from the west through the night.

Frosty weather in the North

A yellow weather ice and snow warning has been in place for Northern Ireland this morning but is set to lift at 10am this morning.

Yellow weather warnings for snow and ice are already in place for parts of the UK, ahead of amber snow warnings for northern Scotland which begin at midday on Friday.

For England and Wales, the UK Met Office has advised of travel disruption as wintry weather moves southeastwards over parts of England and Wales on January 2.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place throughout Friday morning for an area covering London, Greater Manchester and Cardiff.
