Dream car of the week: Tesla Model S P90d

Every week we bring you a dream car, you know, the one you’d buy if you won the lottery.

THE TESLA MODEL S P90d is a car straight out of science fiction movies. No, seriously, it is. It has a function called ‘Ludicrous Speed’. Yup, that’s correct film nerds, a function lifted straight out of Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs. If that’s not the coolest feature of any car, I don’t know what is.

Ludicrous Speed helped make the Tesla Model S P90d the first production car with four doors to break the 3.0-second 0-to-60mph barrier, doing it in 2.8 seconds. Oh, and did I mention it has an Autopilot feature and it is an all-electric vehicle? Fast, funny and futuristic. What’s not to love? If George Jetson had a dream car, this would be it.

OK, let’s break it down. The P90d is the high-performance Model S. The P stands for ‘performance’, the 90 stands for the 90kWh battery and the d stands for dual motor. All of these elements combine to deliver some serious performance and decent driving range.

In the metal, this car is super sleek, elegant and very aerodynamic looking. It has a modern and clean design. This car is finished in a dark blue metallic paint and has an all glass panoramic roof. It glides smoothly along on 21-inch Silver Turbine alloys with Tesla Red four-piston Brembo brake calipers.

The cabin is minimal, not sparse at all, just calm, zen and very functional. The interior of this car is fitted with Next Generation Seats and finished in tan leather with black Alcantara headliner and Obeche Wood Gloss decor. How posh does that all sound?

What all those elements and fabric help create is a very refined, calm and executive feeling cabin. The main feature of the cabin is a huge 17-inch vertical touchscreen from where you can control almost all functions of the car. You also get onboard maps and navigation with free updates for seven years.

The safety equipment in this car is extensive and includes six airbags, electronic stability and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes with electronic parking brake, front and side collision avoidance, blind spot warning, lane departure warning, parking sensors and three second-row ISOFIX attachments for child seat installations, which accommodates three child seats simultaneously: two with ISOFIX and one with top tether and belt.

As mentioned, this particular car comes with the Ludicrous Speed Upgrade and also Autopilot Convenience Features, which automatically pilots the Model S at motorway speeds and in stop and start traffic. It also automatically changes lanes with the tap of the indicator, a feature not yet found on any other car on the market. If that’s not enough for you, the Model S and Autopilot can even scan for parking spaces and park neatly on command.

This car is powered by a 3-Phase 4-Pole AC Induction Motor. This engine is mated to a one-speed fixed gear transmission, which sends power to all four wheels. The engine produces 532hp and 966Nm of torque. The car accelerates 0-100km/h in 3.0 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 250km/h.

It has a range of 509km and it falls into tax band A0, which is €120 a year to tax. It comes with 50km on the clock and a €169,950 price tag.

If this Tesla Model S P90d is your dream car, then contact DC Motor Co. in Dublin to arrange a test drive.
