EVERY WEEKDAY evening, TheJournal.ie brings you the five things you need to know by 5pm.
1. #PRIORY HALL: Dublin City Manager John Tierney has warned there is “no easy solution” to the Priory Hall problems which have seen 187 families forced from the property over serious fire safety concerns. An emergency motion was passed at last night’s Dublin City Council meeting to seek emergency funds from the government to keep paying the alternative housing costs of Priory Hall’s former residents.
2. #PORN ON A PLANE: Ryanair has denied reports it was planning to introduce an inflight entertainment service that would include pornography. The budget airline is currently reviewing the possibility of introducing internet services on board its flights.
3. #HUNTING: A hunting lobby group has criticised Fine Gael for breaking what it says was a pre-election party pledge to reverse the government ban on stag hunting in return for support from members of the Nationals Association of Regional Game Councils. The organisation says it struck a deal with the party on the issue before the February election.
4. #GREECE: A former ECB official is to become the next prime minister of Greece following intense negotiations between the government and opposition. George Papandreou agreed to step down as Greece lay on the brink of bankruptcy following the EU’s decision to withhold its next tranche of bailout funds over the country’s uncertain political situation.
5. #WHAT IF…: A 400-metre-wide asteroid will come within 300,000 kilometres of the Earth tonight (that’s just within the moon’s orbit of the Earth). NASA has already plotted its trajectory and says that it poses absolutely no risk to us, but here’s TheJournal.ie‘s guide to what would happen if an asteroid of this size did hit Earth.
