Far from run-of-the-mill: This luxurious period home is the perfect place to escape the grind

The Mill House was completely refurbished in 2000 and now offers a wealth of modern features.

IT IS RARE to find a historic property that has been completely refitted to modern specifications, but The Mill House in Naul, Co Dublin is one such home.

Built around 1740, the building was originally home to the miller at the nearby mill. It stood for two and a half centuries before being completely refurbished, modernised and upgraded in 2000.

Today, it is a home where unique period features surround ultra-modern fittings. It sits in a peaceful green setting, yet only a minute’s walk from picturesque Naul village, and is now on the market with Grainne McKenna for €750,000

On entering the home, your first sight is the striking hallway with exposed stone walls, and reception room leading from either side. Both offer feature fireplaces and are fitted with an eye for historic detail – one with painstakingly reclaimed pitch pine floorboards, the other with Portuguese limestone tiles.

To the left, you are led through to an impressive kitchen centred around a Sorn oil-fired range. An island provides casual seating while double doors lead out to the garden.

On the right hand side of the house, a dining room is anchored by reclaimed church windows and family or guests can enjoy dinner under a feature stairway to the mezzanine style landing level above.

The first floor offers three spacious double bedrooms, with a fourth currently in use as a dressing room. There is also a pair of bathrooms on this floor. The smaller of the two looks over the peaceful rear garden, but it is the family bathroom that is the real showpiece, with his and hers sinks, a double length shower, and steps leading to a six-foot Jacuzzi bath.

Through those French doors from the kitchen, there’s also plenty of exterior space. The most striking feature here is the large decking area with an automatic retractable awning – making it usable all year round. A built-in barbecue and firepit make this the perfect space for entertaining.

Beyond that, the rear garden is edged with mature trees and limestone boundary walls, creating a sense of seclusion that belies the location.
