With 150 new or enhanced TFI Local Link bus services since 2022 alone, planning your weekend travel has never been easier.

PACKING UP THE car for a family day out can take the fun out of an adventure before it even starts. And if you don’t have a car, it might seem like you’re missing out on some of the best day trips Cork has to offer. But thanks to the TFI Local Link network, that’s never the case.

Thanks to the Connecting Ireland Rural Mobility Plan, developed by the National Transport Authority (NTA), TFI Local Link now operates various rural bus routes across Ireland, many of which are brand new or recently enhanced. Since January 2022, more than 150 new or enhanced services have been introduced, helping connect people in towns and villages to key amenities, visitor attractions, and the wider TFI Public Transport Network. Whether you’re planning a weekend adventure or simply want to explore more of what Cork has to offer, there’s never been a better time to rediscover the bus, especially if you have your family in tow. So save this list of bus-friendly brilliant activities to do with your gang:

Killavullen Loop hiking trail

If you’re in Cork, there are countless ways to make the most of the weekend without ever turning a key in the ignition. For those who enjoy the outdoors, try Route 530 from Fermoy to Mallow, which links to the Killavullen Loop hiking trail. This moderate 6.3 kilometre walk takes about two to two and a half hours to complete and winds through the historic village before heading into Cloghvoolia Forest. Along the way, there are stunning views of the Blackwater Valley, Avondhu Region, and the Nagle, Boggeragh, Ballyhoura and Galtee Mountains. Pack snacks, bring plenty of water, and enjoy a family-friendly hike surrounded by Cork’s natural beauty.

Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary

If animals are more your thing, hop on Route 522 from Charleville to Mallow and visit the Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary. Here you can see first-hand how donkeys’ lives are transformed through the sanctuary’s welfare, rehoming and care programmes. It’s a wonderful day out for children and adults alike, and while you can adopt a donkey, you’ll have to leave your new four-legged friend behind when it’s time to take the bus home.

Doneraile Wildlife Park

For a relaxed yet memorable day, Route 523 from Mitchelstown to Mallow brings you to Doneraile Wildlife Park, one of Cork’s most beautiful open spaces. Covering 166 hectares, this 18th-century landscaped park offers walking trails, mature groves of trees, restored water features and freely roaming deer herds. It’s a perfect spot for a picnic or a peaceful walk, and you can stop into Catoca Café Tea Rooms for a treat before letting the kids enjoy the large playground on the grounds.

Clonakilty Adventure Centre

If your family enjoys a bit more adventure, Route 253 from Clonakilty to Kinsale will take you to the Clonakilty Adventure Centre, a fun-filled destination for families of all ages. From aerial trekking and high ropes courses to a climbing tower, zip line, power fan jump and adventure golf, there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained. With the bus taking care of the journey, you can focus on the fun instead of the directions.

Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve

Nature lovers can take Route 232 from Kilcrohane to Castletownbere and stop at Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve. This 300-hectare reserve is home to ancient oak woodlands and regenerating young forests. Visitors can enjoy a gentle river walk or make the steep but rewarding climb up to Lady Bantry’s Lookout for stunning views of Bantry Bay. It’s a peaceful day out surrounded by Cork’s wild scenery — just remember to bring your hiking boots.

Mizen Head Signal Station

For a truly spectacular experience, take Route 265 from Mizen Head to Skibbereen and visit the Mizen Head Signal Station Visitor Centre. Perched high above the Atlantic Ocean, this award-winning maritime attraction offers incredible views, fascinating history and the famous 99 steps leading down to the signal station. It’s one of Ireland’s most breathtaking coastal spots, and the perfect way to get your steps in before relaxing on the bus journey home.

There are countless other TFI Local Link connections across Cork and beyond, linking you to outdoor adventures, family attractions and weekend getaways – all without needing a car.
