Unlucky jewel thief chased and detained by 'marathon man' gardaí

Four off-duty officers, who just happened to be accomplished marathon-runners, were meeting for coffee across the road as the robbery took place.

A MAN IS due before court in Tralee later today after he was intercepted and chased by four marathon-runner gardaí as he fled a jewellery shop.

The man was seen running from the shop on Dominick Street in the Co Kerry town in the wake of the robbery at around 4.40pm yesterday.

The off-duty gardaí, who also happened to be accomplished marathon runners, were having a cup of coffee at a café across the street as it happened.

They gave chase and detained the man, recovering around €30,000 worth of jewellery.

The man was detained at Tralee Garda Station under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, and later charged.

He’s scheduled to appear before Tralee District Court this morning.
