Zelenskyy says he will send US updated plan to end the Ukraine war tomorrow

It comes as US president Donald Trump has again criticised Europe, calling it “decaying” and “weak”.

UKRAINAN PRSIDENT VOLODYMYR Zelenskyy has said he intends to send an updated plan to end the war with Russia to Washington tomorrow, after it was amended following talks with European allies.

Zelenskyy said he plans to send the US revised proposals “in the near future” on ending Russia’s war on Ukraine, after meeting with European allies to strategise on their next steps.

“We are working today and will continue tomorrow. I think we will hand it over tomorrow,” Zelensky said in answer to a journalist’s question on whether Ukraine had already sent the plan to the US.

It comes as US president Donald Trump has again criticised Europe, calling it “decaying” and “weak”.

Trump is pressuring Kyiv to accept a deal put forward by Washington, the initial version of which was criticised by Ukraine’s allies as overly favourable to Russia.

Washington’s proposals involved Ukraine surrendering land that Russia has not captured – the entire Donbas region – in return for security promises that fall short of Kyiv’s aspirations to join NATO.

Writing on X after meetings with European allies, Zelensky said the “Ukrainian and European components are now more developed, and we are ready to present them to our partners in the US”.

‘Weak’ and ‘decaying’

Trump, who earlier accused Zelenskyy of not reading the latest US proposals, said Russia had the “upper hand” in the conflict, in an interview with Politico published on Tuesday.

He also lashed out again at Europe, calling it “weak” and “decaying”.

“Europe doesn’t know what to do,” Trump said, “They want to be politically correct, and it makes them weak.”

Trump said he liked most of Europe’s current leaders as he hit out at their migration policies.

He claimed that many European states will “not be viable countries any longer” due to their immigration policies.

“Most European nations… they’re decaying,” Trump said.

He slammed the direction of Paris and London, calling the latter city’s mayor Sadiq Khan “disgusting”.

Trump also accused Kyiv of “using war” to avoid elections, which have been postponed under the imposition of martial law since Russia invaded its neighbour.

“You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore,” Trump said.

‘No legal right’ to surrender land

Yesterday, Zelenskyy said that Washington’s 28-point plan had been reduced to 20 points after US-Ukraine talks at the weekend.

He pointed to the land issue and international security guarantees as two of the main sticking points.

Do we envision ceding territories? We have no legal right to do so, under Ukrainian law, our constitution and international law. And we don’t have any moral right either.

Zelenskyy said it was critical for Ukraine to know “what our partners will be ready to do in the event of new aggression by Russia”.

“At the moment, we have not received any answer to this question,” he said.

During a televised event today, Russian President Vladimir Putin called Ukraine’s eastern Donbas region Russia’s “historical territory”.

“This territory is important; it is our historical territory, absolutely,” he said.

Death of first serving British solider in Ukraine

Meanwhile, a UK armed forces member was killed in a “tragic accident” in Ukraine while observing a weapons test away from the frontline, the first death of a serving British soldier in the nearly four-year war, the defence ministry said on Tuesday.

“It is with deep regret that we must announce that a member of the UK Armed Forces died in Ukraine this morning,” the Ministry of Defence said.

It marked the first time a member of the UK military had been killed in Ukraine since Russia’s February 2022 invasion, it said.

“He was injured in a tragic accident whilst observing Ukrainian forces test a new defensive capability, away from the front lines,” it added.

The UK has previously said there are a “small number” of UK troops in the country supporting Ukrainian forces.

An ex-British soldier who was volunteering with the Ukrainian army was killed far from the frontline in 2023. A UK coroner’s inquest last year found that he was killed by a “comrade” also volunteering with the Ukrainian forces.
