Underground oil laundering plant discovered in Monaghan

Plant had capacity to launder an estimated 10 million litres of fuel per year.

A LARGE UNDERGROUND oil laundering plant has been discovered in Monaghan.

The discovery was made by officers from the Revenue’s Customs Service, who were assisted by Gardaí from Monaghan and the Regional Response Unit.

They uncovered the large underground plant this morning at a location near Monaghan Town.

The plant had the capacity to launder an estimated 10 million litres of fuel per year. This represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €6m per year, Revenue said.

At the plant, customs officers seized 40,000 litres of laundered fuel, a lorry, four cars and a van. They also seized and dismantled ancillary equipment.

A number of individuals were questioned and investigations are ongoing.
