THE WEEKEND IS kicking off – but what should you watch?

We’ve taken a look through what’s on offer and picked out series and movies that you can check out over the next three days on streaming and the telly. 

Blue Moon

This delightful film is also a poignant one. It’s set across the evening of 31 March, 1943, when the legendary lyricist Lorenz Hart (of Rodgers and Hart) has to assess his life and contributions to art while drowning his sorrows in a bar. Andrew Scott plays his former collaborator Richard Rodgers, who the same night is celebrating the opening night of his hit musical Oklahoma!. Notably, this Oscar-nominated movie was filmed in Ireland.

Pillion

One of last year’s best films, this comes from writer/director Harry Lighton and stars Harry Melling as Colin, a quiet young parking attendant who falls heavily for tattooed biker Ray (Alexander Saarsgaard). But with Ray ensconced in the BDSM biker scene, what does that mean for their nascent relationship? Sweet, hot and funny, this is an outstanding debut from Lighton.

Gorilla Story

Is there anything more wonderful than watching a documentary featuring David Attenborough? This tells the story of his first encounter with the baby gorilla Pablo and how Pablo’s direct descendants are doing today in the mountains of Rwanda. It’s narrated by Attenborough and includes excerpts from his 1978 journals.

Taskmaster

This show – running for 21 seasons now – is one of the highlights of British TV comedy. It involves comedians facing off during a range of improbable and hilarious tasks. Join Greg Davies and sidekick Alex Horne as they put contestants through their paces.

Missing The Traitors? Try this for size. Million Dollar Secret involves 14 strangers who stay at a glamorous lakeside estate. Each one of them will find a mysterious box in their bedroom, and while 13 of the boxes are empty, one contains $1,000,000. The guest can keep it as long as they don’t spill the beans about finding it. It’s trickier than it seems.
