The man was taken to St. James’ Hospital yesterday evening with head injuries after the two-hour incident in the south Dublin suburb of Windy Arbour. It has since been confirmed that he died overnight.

Locals had reported hearing a number of shots being fired during the incident with the man described as being  in a “distressed” state and sitting in a car.

It is believed that the man was armed with a legally held 9mm pistol during the incident but gardaí confirmed yesterday that he had not fired any shots at them.
