Big Freeze

Freezing weather and further snowfall causing difficult driving conditions

AA Roadwatch warns drivers to take extra care today as compacted snow and ice cover Irish roads.

LAST NIGHT’S SNOWFALL has caused dangerous driving conditions on roads across the country.

Compacted snow and ice are causing problems and AA Roadwatch is warning motorists to exercise care on all roads.

The main routes have been gritted, but AAR warns that those roads are liable to freeze again, so caution is still advised.

Secondary roads are described as being “treacherous”, and motorists are warned to drive much more slowly than usual, according to Conor Faughnan. Speaking to RTÉ’s Marian Finucane, Faughnan advised using a high gear, but said drivers should avoid touching the brakes.

He said to be extra vigilant for children who may wander onto the road while playing in the snow.

Further snowfall is forecast for today and Met Éireann says highest temperatures today will be between 0 and 3 degrees. The cold weather could last until Friday, according to the five-day forecast.

Freezing fog, frost, icy roads, snow and hail showers will continue. A record minus-9 degrees was recorded last night.

Volunteer organisation ALONE is encouraging people to check up on older relatives and neighbours during the cold snap.

Travel updates

AA Roadwatch is providing regular updates on driving conditions on its website.

Dublin Airport stayed open this morning despite the snow. Their spokesperson told TheJournal.ie that flights are operating as planned, albeit with some delays.

In Dublin, the Luas red line is only operating from Tallaght to Smithfield, but Luas tickets will be accepted on all Dublin Bus routes.

Irish Rail says that all Intercity, Dart and Commuter services are running, while Bus Éireann says there are delays on some routes due to today’s driving conditions.
