96-year-old woman attacked in aggravated burglary in Donegal

The woman was gagged and “roughed up” by a man who broke into her house early this morning.

A 96-YEAR-OLD woman was hospitalised this morning after an aggravated burglary in her home in Ardaravan, Co Donegal.

At 12.30am this morning a man dressed in dark clothes entered the house through the kitchen window. He proceeded to the elderly woman’s bedroom where gardaí say he gagged her and “roughed her up”.

The man left with the contents of the woman’s handbag including a quantity of cash. After the man left the woman pushed her panic button and gardaí arrived almost immediately.

Two males in dark clothing and with local accents were seen leaving the area in the direction of Tullydish and an extensive search was carried out by gardaí at the scene.

The elderly woman was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital suffering from shock, though her injuries are not thought to be serious.

Anyone with any information about the incident is being urged to contact Buncrana Garda station on 074 932 0540. Gardaí also said today they would encourage the use of personal alarms among the elderly as it can be extremely useful in incidents such as this.
