Missing AIB customer details found after bag handed into Galway business

About 550 customers were affected.

MISSING DOCUMENTS CONTAINING details of AIB customers in Galway have been found after they were handed in to a local business.

Information relating to 550 customers from Salthill and An Spidéal were “mislaid” at the end of last month but the story only became news this week when it was reported by Raidió na Gaeltachta.

It’s now transpired that a bag containing the documents was handed into a local business soon after they went missing but that the business owner only realised their importance after this week’s publicity.

Raidió na Gaeltachta reports that the bag was then handed into an AIB branch in Galway.

AIB has also now confirmed that the documents have been found and that they have begun the process of contacting customers.

“The mislaid documentation was located on the evening of the 12 September when a business owner in Galway contacted AIB to inform us the documentation was handed in to his premises on the day it was mislaid,” AIB said in a statement.

“All information has been retrieved. The Data Protection Commissioner has been informed. Customer contact commenced yesterday and is well advanced.”

AIB had previously assured its customers that their addresses and PINs were not lost as a result of the data breach, and that their accounts are still secure.
